Short Synopsis

1952. Rose Dobell, pregnant and full of hope, boards the New Australia in Portsmouth, bound for a new life with her husband, Joe. On board, she slips into the ship's cinema and watches silent movies, films of a female outlaw, afraid of nothing and no-one. When Rose goes into an early and traumatic labour, she needs some of that outlaw's courage. In Australia, alone and lost, she meets a Chinese doctor who begins to tell her tales of a courageous circus rider who became an outlaw at the beginning of the twentieth century: Jess A.

Sold by her father and circus-raised, Jess A is a stunt-rider who can outride any man. In the early days of cinema she finds her calling, playing wild outlaw women who answer to no-one. When her Chinese circus-owner husband disappears, she finds herself closer to the outlaw's life than she had ever imagined.

When Rose's despair finally wins and she swallows the stash of pills she's kept with her, it's Jess's story which comes to life, and which, ultimately, will have the power to save her.
